Stories on the Road

I’ve driven across America a half a dozen times, now, but the very best road trip of all of them was the first one, the one I took with my friend Sevilla, driving a monkey-shit brown Ford Grenada lowrider, sleeping in hotel parking lots and, at one point, stranded in Billings Montana, waiting for a tire to be delivered, eating a MRE we’d been given “for emergencies” from a military friend of ours. And the stuff we listened to! This was an era before audiobooks, and so I was forced to listen to cassette tapes of her horrible industrial music, having brought no music of my own, except when I was able to throw in a little Simon and Garfunkel, which belonged to her parents, and who she thought were hopelessly passé and cheesy.

But the books that inspired us to go on the road trips to begin with, that made us fall in love with the romance of the road, were tales of highways and adventure, from On the Road to Blue Highways, and honestly, I think Sevilla and I would have come up with a better soundtrack for our trip if we’d listened to audiobooks instead.

Now that we’re older, and travel with our husbands, wives, grandmas, daughters and sons, we’ve improved our listening habits somewhat, and can even afford to stay in hotels, and not just their parking lots. We love audiobooks, our kids love audiobooks, and we’ve become road trip audiobook aficionados.

We polled the Findery team, searched the Audible database, and came up with a great list of audiobooks to inspire you to greater adventure, pacify the rugrats, inform, inspire and entertain. All of these can be downloaded from Audible, and listened to while rolling down those distant highways.
